Mosquito-born zica virus Has Been Confirmed By Brazilian Health Authorities To Cause Fatal Brain-damage.

Image
RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - A link between a form of fetal brain damage and the mosquito-born zica virus has been confirmed by Brazilian health authorities on Saturday. The link between zica, first medically identified as a new disease half a century ago, and birth defects has never been made.  The virus, endemic in parts Africa, South America, Southeast Asia and some Pacific Islands, has until now been blamed for symptoms such as fever, mild headache, skin rashes, joint pain and conjunctivitis, or "red eye." Initial analysis shows that the virus can be passed to a fetus and that the fetus is at greatest risk from the virus during the first three months of pregnancy, the statements said. More tests and studies are needed to clarify the exact method of transmission and infection, the statement added. A surge in recent months of babies born with microcephaly, or an unnaturally small brain, in Brazil's northeast, led authorities to suspect t

WHO To Remove Nigeria From List Of Polio Endemic Countries

Image
After years of intense efforts to eradicate Polio in Nigeria, and successful recording of one year without a case of the disease, Nigeria is set to be officially removed from the list of Polio endemic countries. The announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO) is expected at a meeting of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in New York. Three years without cases are required before it can be declared polio-free. This will mean that there will be just two endemic countries – Pakistan and Afghanistan – where transmission of the paralysing virus has never been interrupted. UNICEF Country Representative in Nigeria, Jean Gough, described it as an important milestone, but warned that “efforts must be sustained at every level, if Polio is to be eradicated”. Polio is spread by poor sanitation and contaminated water which usually affects children. The virus attacks the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis – usually of the legs –

Bird Flu Recorded In Port Harcourt

Image
Farmers and consumers of poultry products in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, have again been put on red alert, following the confirmation of the outbreak of Avian Flu (Bird Flu) disease by the Rivers State Government. The Director, Public Health Services in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nnanna Onyekwere, while speaking to Channels Television, said that two farms in Choba, Obio Akpor Local Government Area in Port Harcourt have already been affected. According to him, the ministry is appealing to owners of poultry houses in the state to report any strange sign noticed in their birds. The Ministry of Health has, however, given residents the assurance that the government is on top of the situation to stem any possible spread of the disease. The Federal Government of Nigeria had assured poultry farmers in June that the Avian Influenza has been contained .

Lebanon Charges Saudi Prince With Drug Smuggling

Image
A Saudi Prince and nine other people have been charged with drug smuggling in Lebanon. They were arrested after two tones of Captagon  pills were found in cases being loaded on a private jet. The pills, which typically contain amphetamine and caffeine, are consumed widely in the Middle East. The drug was first produced in the 1960s, to treat hyperactivity, narcolepsy and depression. But it was banned in most countries by the 1980s, because it was too addictive.

the Pill-Sized Camera That help Doctors DETECT inside Story

Image
It is the size of a large vitamin pill but can do far more good for a patient.  When swallowed, this tiny camera helps doctors to diagnose illnesses by transmitting close-up images of the digestive tract.  Patients can get on with their lives as the £300 device, which is about an inch long and less than half an inch across, passes naturally through the body and is discarded.  The battery-powered digital video camera has its own set of lightemitting diodes and a transmitter. It relays pictures to a data recorder - which looks like a personal stereo and worn on a belt around the waist - at the rate of two frames a second for about eight hours.  Doctors download information from the recorder on to a computer to get a close-up of a patient's digestive tract without the need for a hospital stay. Experts say the camera will make it faster and easier to diagnose life-threatening conditions such as stomach and bowel cancer, as well as ailments including ulcers and

WHAT TO KNW ABOUT FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Image
Food technology includes functional foods, modified foods and nutraceuticals. Functional foods are foods or dietary components that may provide an additional function (such as health benefits or disease prevention) beyond basic nutrition. These may be enhancements to naturally occurring benefits in conventional foods, such as increased omega-3 fatty acids in salmon and increasing the fibre in oat bran, or ingredients added to foods during processing to provide benefits that promote optimal health. Nutraceuticals, a subset of functional foods, are derived from food sources and taken as supplements to provide extra health benefits. Modified foods such as folate-enriched breads and foods formulated with bioactive ingredients such as fish oils, plant sterol esters or lutein may play an important role in promoting health. They can further enhance a diet made up primarily of conventional foods with functional properties such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.

Agrobiotech Stem cell treatments & regenerative medicine

Image
Stem cell-based therapies are showing potential to work at the source of many diseases including diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and certain cancers. Should the regenerative properties of stem cells be fully harnessed, there is potential to repair damaged regions of organs including the heart and brain and re-grow blood vessels. Stem cells may offer the possibility of treating disease and disability that has remained stubbornly off-limits to intervention and may now become treatable. Spinal cord damage could be corrected, and the clock could finally be wound back on neurodegenerative diseases. Although the clinical application of stem cells can be traced back to the 1950s when the first bone marrow transplants were performed, there has been an explosion in stem cell research since then. Significant advancements in research have been made in the 15 years that have passed since the human embryonic stem cell (hESC) was first described. Stem cell exploration h

DID YOU KNOW...25 Things You Did Today That Ruined Your Metabolism

Image
Metabolism. It’s the set of life-sustaining chemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. It’s such a big concept that you might believe you’re at the mercy of it. Well, you are! It’s thermodynamics at work, after all. But there are a bunch of simple — even easy — things you can do to boost your metabolism and make your body run more efficiently. Make tomorrow a great day by learning from the common metabolism mistakes you probably made today. 1. You didn’t get a good night’s sleep  If you're chronically sleep deprived, don’t be surprised if you gain a few pounds without eating a morsel of extra food. “A lack of sleep can cause several metabolic problems,” says nutritionist Seth Santoro. “It can cause you to burn fewer calories, lack appetite control and experience an increase in cortisol levels, which stores fat.” Lack of sufficient sleep — which experts say is 7 to 9 hours a night for most people — also leads to impaired glucose tolerance,
